You have probably heard of this new virus by now. Due to the inter-connected and international world we live in, this virus, named coronavirus, has spread rapidly in the course of just this week. The first case emerged out of the city Wuhan, China and was reported on December 31th. Since, 4,581 cases have been made worldwide, coming from countries such as the USA, Canada, Australia, France and Germany and a total of 106 deaths.


How did it start?

It originated from illegally traded wildlife at a sea-food market. The initial victims were elderly people with pre-existing respiratory conditions. Most of the recorded deaths have been in the Hubei region.


What is it, exactly?

The coronavirus is a type of respiratory infection. The symptoms include the common cold, headaches, fatigue and fever. It is transmitted by human-to-human contact and can result in pneumonia, kidney failure and death. There is currently no treatment for the virus as this is a new mutation with no cure.


What measures are being taken?

Hong Kong has announced plans to close borders to mainland China in order to prevent further cases of infection. A new hospital is being built in Wuhan to accommodate the victims of the virus. Around 17 cities with more than 50 million people have been placed on lockdown.
