Emmys 2020: Euphoria star Zendaya makes history

24-year old actress Zendaya made history at the 2020 Emmys with her win for ‘Euphoria’.

She has become the youngest woman to win best actress in a drama series at the Emmys, for her portrayal of Rue in HBO’s ‘Euphoria’.

The former Disney star beat out her tough competition of Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh, Ozark’s Laura Linney and The Morning Show’s Jennifer Aniston.

At the virtual ceremony, she’s seen celebrating with her family. She says, “I know this feels like a really weird time to be celebrating. But I just want to say there is hope in the young people out there – I know that our TV show doesn’t always feel like a great example of that – but there is hope in our young people and I just want to say to all my peers out there doing the work in the streets, I see you, I admire you, I thank you.'”

Euphoria, the American teen drama series created by Sam Levinson, received many positive reviews because of its cinematography, story, score, performances and approach to its mature subject matter. It follows the story of a group of high school students in their experiences of friendships, sex, drugs, love, identity and trauma; it premiered on HBO on June 16, 2019 and has recently been renewed for a second season.

When backstage, Zendaya said, “To have that feeling that there are people that feel what [Rue] feels is huge and very important… She’s very important to me.”

Her win was well received. Variety’s Caroline Framke wrote, “Though written with vicious precision by Sam Levinson, Rue’s only as effective as she is because Zendaya is so incredibly good at portraying her.

“The character could have been – and sometimes is – a mess of cliched teenaged angst. Instead, Zendaya digs into every corner of her gnarled psyche to find the terrified kid hiding in the shadows.”

This take was agreed on by many other stars, such as Reese Witherspoon, who said in a Tweet, “So happy for you, @Zendaya!! Your performance in #Euphoria is outstanding 🌟 💯🙌”

Zendaya wasn’t the only star to break records and make history, as comedy show Schitt’s Creek walked away with nine Emmys, breaking the record for most wins in a single season for a comedy. The sixth and final season aired early in 2020, and centers around a family going bankrupt with their only asset being a small ugly town called Schitt’s Creek.

The series took home the following prizes: Best Comedy Series Prize; Best Comedy Actor for Eugene Levy; Best Supporting Comedy Actor for Daniel Levy; Best Comedy Actress for Catherine O’Hara; Best Comedy Supporting Actress for Annie Murphy; Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for Andrew Cividino and Daniel Levy; Outstanding Writing for the Finale Episode Happy Ending for Daniel Levy; and more.

The 72nd Emmys featured a special Memoriam section to honor the lives that have been lost this year. The memoriam featured Chadwick Boseman, Naya Rivera, Caroll Spinney, Kirk Douglas, Sir Ian Holm and Dame Diana Rigg.
