Starting from 2019, we can always see the hashtag “Free Britney Movement”, the movement was bursting out. What happened to Britney Spears, the American super star, what had she has been suffering and why did this happen to her?

 

Whenever we talk about Britney Spears, her songs pop up in our mind, knowing that she is a very successful singer. The superstar started showing up to the public at the age of ten and released her first single, “…Baby One More Time” in 1998. This gave her an enormous attention from the folk, and was continued when she released her second album, “Oops!… I Did It Again”. In the following years, Britney Spears became the spokesperson for Pepsi and released her hit single “Toxic”, which pushed her to become the super star she is today. While Britney Spears was rising up in her career, for her personal life, she dated with a dancer, Kevin Federline. They got married in 2004 and had two kids later. At this time, the public started to lose interest in her music, expressing more interest in her personal and private life. The paparazzi followed Britney Spears all the time, everywhere, obsessively. By the end of 2006, Britney and Federline announced their divorcement. Rumours about Britney Spears spiralling toward rock bottom was spread over. Shaving her head at a salon, worsened the rumours…

 

On January 4th, 2008, a court commissioner awarded sole legal and physical custody of Spears’ two children to her ex-husband and her visitation rights was suspended. During 2008, Britney hospitalized in a psychiatric hold. On Feb 1, 2008, A Superior Court commissioner placed Britney Spears and her estate under temporary conservatorship. Her father, Jamie Spears, became her conservator with the attorney, Andrew Wallet, were name conservator of the estate. Conservatorship is created when a person cannot care for themselves or handle their own affairs. The conservatorship allows Jamie to make decisions related to Britney’s personal affairs. This also means that Britney would lose the ability to decide anything related to her healthcare, rights of communicating with people of her choosing, and rights of who she visits.

 

The “Free Britney movement”, was launched in 2009 by Britney’s fans, who had been aware about the conservatorship issue. They worried that Jamie Spears would abuse the conservatorship to control Britney. Despite bring placed under a conservatorship, Britney kept on releasing new albums and continued tours : The circus, Femme Fatale Tour, and Piece of Me Tour. Also, concert residencies in Las Vegas from 2013 to 2017. Her fans often deemed that Britney have the ability to take care herself and the conservatorship should be ended.

 

In April, 2019, a voice message was released by Britney’s ex-manager. It was about Britney Spears refusing to take her medication. Britney had been involuntarily held in the facility since January because she was violating a rule which banned her from driving, and that the conservatorship should be ended in 2009. Her fans started bringing up the Free Britney Movement afterwards, protesting in front of the West Hollywood City Hall and called for the release of Britney Spears in 2019. The movement went from a small group of her fans to a global movement. Protestors would wear pink shirts and held pink flags in their hands with “Free Britney” printed on them. In September 2019,  due to the health issues, Jamie was temporarily replaced as co- conservator with Jodi Montgomery, Britney’s care manager. In other words, though it seemed s that Jamie had stepped back, in fact, Britney was still under control of Jamie’s and Jodi’s conservatorship. In August 2020, Ingham submitted a petition stating that Britney strongly opposed having Jamie return as sole conservator once he recovered from his health problem, but was turned down by the court. The documentary “Framing Britney Spears” was released in February 2021 and was met with a huge response among her fans and celebrities. The public was aware of Britney’s mental health and conservatorship issue. #FreeBritney movement started trending globally on , Twitter and Instagram.

 

After Britney’s alleged explosive testimony, that she was forced to keep an IUD contraceptive device against her will, and pleaded for her father to be removed from the conservatorship. On September 29 2021, Jamie Spears was formally suspended from Britney’s conservatorship after three months. After being under Jamie’s control for 13 years, Britney was finally freed from the conservatorship with her fans were celebrating outside the court
