Seoyun Choi responds to the question: Are some types of knowledge more useful than others?

Object 1: Dance video album

This album is an album of only dance videos in my phone gallery. There is choreography video divided into nano units, slow choreography video, choreography detail captured photo, and dance video that I’ve done. This is a very important album to me, and it helped me a lot, so as soon as I see “Are some types of knowledge more useful than other?” in the prompt, it’s a topic I want to talk about.

I started making this video album to memorize the choreography faster during dance club activities. So, for a moment, this knowledge was very useful to me, but I wondered is it really needed for others. This object is very useful for people like me who need to memorize dance movement quickly, but people who are not interested in dancing don’t need it. For example, because there were not many people around me who were interested in dancing, people around me did not gain knowledge through this object. Therefore, the knowledge of this object is seen as knowledge that is of great necessity to me and that others will not even care about.

On the other hand, this object can be used for a variety of purposes depending on what knowledge you need and what others need. I made a dance video album because it was the key to memorizing the choreography quickly, but if other people make albums based on the knowledge they need, the utility of this object will increase. If you find knowledge that is more useful to you and use it well, it will have a better effect on your career. Some pieces of knowledge may be more useful to me than others, but in other ways, you can apply this knowledge to make things more appropriate for each person

Object 2: A text

This photo is a screenshot of a text message exchange with a close friend in Korean saying, “Homework is psychology and biology.” She responded that she was embarrassed by her lack of language. This can be seen in her embarrassment about the language barrier and not understanding Korean. This shows that the knowledge required for each person is different, given that the language used in everyday life is different for each person.

English is the most widely spoken language in the world today. So, people who can speak English will feel satisfied, and it will be comfortable to be able to communicate in English no matter where they go. In this case, if I keep texting my friend in Korean, she may feel unfair because of her limited language barrier. When I texted in Korean, she didn’t directly show a negative reaction, but if I continued texting in Korean, she would grow negatively in her mind that she didn’t understand. We can recognize the initial reaction to seeing a foreign language by seeing that the reaction to English is positive, whereas it becomes negative in front of a language that we do not understand.

On the other hand, if you can speak Korean, texting with me is not a problem. It’s a much better position than my friend. I have access to all the knowledge of this conversation on the object. That said, I speak Korean, so I know the full context, but the knowledge my friend has access to is limited to anything written in English. Being able to speak a language other than English, which is a common language, can access various fields and can be used as an advantageous card when getting a job. As a result, both languages are useful, but there are different languages that people prefer, and a language that everyone can use in common is necessary to transfer knowledge.

Object 3: Disaster evacuation manual

This manual shows what to do when a natural disaster occurs. Especially it shows what to do when earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes occurs also fire, biological/chemical threat, and suspicious mail. Each country or region has different weather and social climates, and what kind of evacuation knowledge is needed is different. That is why I want to talk about this prompt “Are some types of knowledge more useful than other?” because natural disaster occurs differently in each country.

The reason that the disaster evacuation manual contributes to the exhibition is that the evacuation knowledge required for each country or region is different. For example, there are many earthquakes in Japan, so they need knowledge how to escape when earthquake happens. On the other hand, Norway could say they would have less risk to face the earthquake, so Norway people don’t need knowledge about earthquake. Also, for people who studies biology and chemistry need to know the biological/chemical threat to cope well but for people who is not related to science, does not need to know the knowledge based on sciences.

However, it may be better to know than to live without knowing the knowledge you do not need. In today’s era, climate change is extreme due to global warming. Earthquakes occurred intermittently in Korea, which was in an earthquake-safe zone, and in fact, earthquake evacuation guidance was taught more importantly in Korean schools. Therefore, it is better to know knowledge that is considered unnecessary because it becomes necessary in the face of a changing environment as time goes by. It is natural that many people who have not yet experienced natural disasters do not know how to evacuate, so we should read and memorize the evacuation manual carefully.
